This pack trip offers one of the best opportunities to see wild grizzly bears. When moth sites are active we have seen as many as 15 bears in a day. We also see elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep and mountain goat on this trip.
Moth sites are one of the few places grizzly bears congregate in the lower 48. The cutworm moth is an important food source for bears. It hides in the rocks and scree during the day to conserve energy. Bears spend hours each day digging for the moth. Making this trip an opportunity to see multiple bears often seeing sows with cubs.
